N3 - Black Crappie Signed Print
Black Crappie (Pomoxis nigromaculatus) were the subjects of a home school project for one of the kids. He designed a aquaponics system from scratch, built it, tested it, and then juvenile fish were introduced using the data and feeding plan used in research at my alma mater (BSc in Biology). Turns out that unlike the lab fish, our Crappie would only eat live food. So initially we used small fathead minnows (Pimephales promelus) and ran into a major problem in that local suppliers were very inconsistent in having stock. We then switched to freshwater shrimp juveniles (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) because we found a great supply source that was high quality, perfectly consistent, cost effective, and the nursery was just down the road.
